Nicaragua Surf Report for Friday, May 19, 2023

Josh S

Happy Friday everyone! Welcome to the Friday surf report! I caught another good surf window from behind the lens this morning. The size has faded considerably since mid-day, but the shape of the waves was really good this morning. There were still some tubes available for those that were prudent enough to wake up early this morning.

Josh S

Alright, let’s get straight into this morning’s tube fest! The wind was, once again, perfectly grooming the rights this morning. You can see that the barrels weren’t monstrous today, but the shape looked just like Kelly’s (WSL’s) wave pool!

Josh S

Today was the least crowded I’ve seen the lineup in close to a week. I guess the big swell from days past exhausted many of the surfers here. I was stoked that the crew of 10-15 guys which were out this morning capitalized on the sets as they came through. The vibrant blue water color exaggerates the experience of getting barreled here in the morning. I bet this one will be etched into our hero’s memory for some time!

Josh S

Our talented crew of surfers just doing business as usual this morning. Making lemonade from lemons. I like it when the surfers go shirtless in the morning as the water is so clear that you can follow their bodies on through the lip as they race through the barrel.

Josh S

Tuck n duck! Dropping the back knee super low to the surfboard deck and pointing to the exit. Way to stay nimble Mr. Red Rails!

Josh S

Over the shrubbery, Pangas was sending through an occasional tube as well! Colorados will always be my favorite, but I’ve heard Pangas has been fun from the regular crew up there.

Josh S

Ah yes! The mysto left peak which emerges south of the river-mouth and beach club. Mesmerizing, but deceptive. I bet this peak would’ve been fun on a boogey board to pack some closeout barrels this AM.

Josh S

Now it’s time for a Lesther Espinoza highlight reel! He combo'd everyone in the water this morning. I don’t think he missed a single set that came through haha. Matando-la Lesther!

Josh S

Lesther has the smoothest barrel riding style of all the local boys here (in my opinion). He just casually stalls with his trailing hand, meanwhile his board is perfectly stable. His style is so smooth that it appears as if he is pressing a button which causes the barrel to speed up, instead of he himself slowing down.

Josh S

Lesther was in the barrel, on rail, and in the air! An all terrain rider. He somehow managed to throw some spray even though he was doing an air-reverse! Way to put on a show this morning Lesther!

Josh S

Don’t worry Lesther, we can all see you just fine from the beach! No need to block the view of the fishermen and their panga boats haha. Here he is demonstrating he can rotate whichever direction he pleases in the air. Alley-oop!

Josh S

To close out the report we have a couple of nice backside snaps. The lefts weren’t hollow today, so our surfers made the appropriate decision to belt the lip instead of stall for barrels.

Josh S

Mr. Red Rails punching his fins over and through the top of the wave. Nice one buddy! This was the highest scoring turn of the morning.

Josh S

That’s all the surf action I’ve got for today amigos! The surfers did well to make the most of today’s smaller waves. If surfing doesn’t happen to be a hobby of yours, but you enjoy jogging, then our beach is perfect for that at low-tide. The sand is flat and the water-line of the beach get’s straighter (less curvy) at low-tide. This chica timed the morning low-tide perfectly, avoiding the blazing mid-day sun and getting after it while the air was still relatively cool. Thanks for checking out the Friday report, and I hope you will come back tomorrow to see if the new forecasted swell manifests!
