Nicaragua Surf Report for Saturday, May 20, 2023

Josh S

Saturday Surf Report coming in hot! Guys… Surfline was finally right… and it was pumping this morning! Unfortunately Vinny lost a board to today’s carnage. The photos speak for themselves today, so I’ll try not to clog your device's screen with my commentary haha.

Josh S

Speed was the name of the game today. About 5-10 of the surfers in the water were clued in that today was all about sending it from a deep take-off and driving across the wave face as hard and fast as possible.

Josh S

The past few “semi” swells have managed to draw more sand off the beach and deposited it out in the lineup. I surfed shortly after shooting and can testify that today really felt like the first day of “Open Season”. Viewers at home, this is your official green light! It’s on!

Josh S

I was surprised that this gentleman didn’t grab his outside rail on this one. Instead he opt-ed to go for one large concerted drive across the face, while staying compact, to attempt to plow through this runner. Bonus points for creativity señor!

Josh S

The best waves we’ve had all year definitely rolled through today. The Northern sandbar was less consistent, but when the good ones came they’d often drain below sea-level.

Josh S

This guy with the neon yellow board came in runner-up to Matt for most bombs packed. Way to stay busy and brave out there dude!

Josh S

I’m a bit biased because I live here, but guys I doubt Slater’s pool is this good. Would you rather come get shacked out of your mind and sip Tonas (the local beer) at sunset or go to super artificial pool that is nowhere near as hollow as Colorados. It’s a no brainer if you ask me… Not to mention that it is likely far more affordable to surf here all day than reserve Slater’s pool for a day.

Josh S

I mean look at it! Even the lefts were perfect today! If you’re staying here in Iguana now, I sure hope you got out there for this morning’s window. It was something else.

Josh S

This shirtless guy with black board-shorts got a handful of beautiful lefts this morning. The lines he took on his waves were perfect as well.

Josh S

Here he is from afar on a tantalizing left. It ended up out pacing him, but kudos for having the kahones to commit on this one amigo!

Josh S

Vinny coming back for vengeance on the tubes that mistreated his baby! Way to grab the back-up stick and dart back out for more!

Josh S

The North bar showing some more love to our surfers up there. This guy was so stoked when he shot out of this barrel. There really is nothing like getting shot out of a square one!

Josh S

As one progresses in surfing, it becomes more and more of a “thrill-seekers” sport. The level of reward rises in lockstep with degree of risk you are subjecting yourself to. Our hero here took a good licking on this right, back-smack straight on the sandbar! OUCH!!!

Josh S

He was not alone. Another one of our challengers decided to join him and see for himself whether the sandbar is hard or soft. I can vouch from personal experience that it is quite firm haha.

Josh S

Nooooo! A beauty that got away. Time to whip out the air-horn and relegate our surfer here to the “15 minute penalty box” haha.

Josh S

And to close the report we have our high-flier from prior surf reports up to his usual antics. This guy is a very skilled surfer. During my surf session after shooting I saw him get this insane left and his style was so perfect that he looked like the re-incarnation of Andy Irons.

Josh S

Viewers, thanks for following along for today’s all-time surf conditions. If you aren’t booking your ticket in another tab right now, then I don’t know what could inspire you to do so… LOL! Today is my last day of this week shooting the report and Captain B-Scott is on for tomorrow. I’m stoked Surfline finally pulled through for us, and that I got to close out my reports with some heat. The size is forecasted to hang around tomorrow, so be sure to clue in for more mind-blowing caverns!!!
