Nicaragua Surf Report for Friday, June 16, 2023

Josh S

Happy Friday everyone! Welcome to the Friday surf report from Playa Colorado. The waves surprised to the upside today! Plenty of tubes were made this morning.

Josh S

I’ll start today’s highlight reel with Sidy from Senegal! He is the first surfer I’ve met here in Nica from Senegal, and seems like a really friendly dude.

Josh S

Sidy decided to come visit our slice of paradise after partaking in a surf contest in El Salvador. I didn’t ask, but based on his surfing I’d imagine he did well at the contest!

Josh S

I saw him pull into some of the better tubes of the morning and he didn’t shy away from blasting through and floating across today's low-tide end-sections.

Josh S

Alright, back to the tubes! There were plenty of them out there today! Not sure what happened on this one, but based on the board bouncing up in the background the surfer likely pulled-back on the takeoff haha

Josh S

The shape of the barrels were pretty ideal today. The lips weren’t vey thick, but that kept the rip currents at bay (and away from ruining the barrel sections of the better set waves).

Josh S

Yewww! This guy snuck underneath the lip just in time on this left. Many of the lefts here have “almondy” barrels, but this one stayed nice and open for our hero here.

Josh S

Even the river-mouth right down the beach was working. There was a sizable crowd in the water today, but luckily there were peaks spread all the way across the beach which helped spread out the crowd.

Josh S

Yep, plenty of tubes today. This guy’s form was interesting. He kept his chest low instead of straight/vertical, but it worked out for him as he got plenty of speed through this one.

Josh S

Sophie found a perfect north-peak right drainer! Carlos Perez, one of the better local surfers here, was amping on this one with me as we watched Sophie lock into it. I bet she was pretty stoked on this one!

Josh S

Lesther was up to business as usual this morning. Making tubes and blasting lips down the beach. Someone’s gotta do it right Lesther? Hehe

Josh S

Carlos Caliente was out under the radar this morning. I had no clue he was out, but I recognized his signature style driving down-the-line through this speedy left. Yeah Carl!

Josh S

Judging by his face here, I'd imagine that Carl had a fun session this morning. Carl and Eugenia just had a baby boy and are now parents! Congrats guys, and I hope things are going well! Eugenia is a hero to be covering baby duties, so that Carl could pack some tubes haha!

Josh S

Our yellow bodyboarder was out again today and on patrol for more gems up at the North bar. This wave he caught was pretty much a carbon copy of yesterday’s, but twice the size.

Josh S

BAM! Who would’ve thought that one could slam the closeout section shut even on a bodyboard? This guy must have really good hip mobility as he spins like a top through these maneuvers.

Josh S

Uh oh! I hope the guy duck-diving got deep enough on this one! The lineup has been a little tight lately, so sometimes funny things can happen haha. I bet the water-photographer (I think it was Rick) got a nice shot of this lip-line tag.

Josh S

I’m pretty sure this is the same shredder from the image above. Looks like he was trying to take a helicopter trip to Costa Rica (as seen faintly in the background). He got high and had some good rotation going, but I think he needs to ring up the Pellas family to get the helicopter dialed in :)

Josh S

Alright! To close out today’s surf action we have one more mini-boost. I’d wager this gentleman skates as his air looked near identical to a skateboard ollie.

Josh S

Thanks for tuning in for Friday’s surf report! It was a pleasant surprise that the surf was better than I had expected. Plenty of tube time for your viewing pleasure! Tomorrow’s forecast looks fairly similar to today, so let’s see if we get more Tubos para Desayuno!
