Nicaragua Surf Report for Friday, October 07, 2022

Brian Scott

Welcome to the Friday surf report and the forefront of what could be a pretty crazy weather weekend for us down here as Hurricane Julia is spinning her way across the Atlantic side making it’s way to and predicted to hit landfall (hitting the east coast of Nicaragua possibly by late Saturday and crossing over the country, with us in the lower part of her path) So Keep your fingers crossed that the damage will be minimal and hopefully by hitting land, it will reduce the hurricanes winds and torrential rains down a bit, maybe lowering it to a possible tropical storm, but pray for the poor people getting the brunt of her force hitting up in the Northern region of Nica.

That being said, I couldn’t make it down for the dawn patrol session, but I went down a bit later to find only a few people out with more people starting to show up, but it was looking pretty grey and really high probability of some rain heading from the east. However, the waves were still pretty fun/good looking. This hombre looking for that infamous tubo, although the swell has dipped quite a bit.

Not sure if you saw yesterdays report, but it was super epic! Today was fun, but like the old saying in surfing goes…….

Brian Scott

You should have been here yesterday! Haahaa

Brian Scott

It was around medium high tide dropping pretty quickly.

But for those who made it down for the arvo sesh, found some really fun corners.

But what had my attention the most was this. Carrying around a couple thousand dollars of camera gear, your number one priority is to always be on the lookout for things like this here.

And sure enough, this rain squall moved in and I mean FAST. Usually you’ll get the minimal (heads up) pre-sprinkles, letting you know it’’s time to either find shelter, or this case today it just started dumping buckets and I was quite aways away from my moto and my camera bag. So I had to boogy out of there, unfortunately, and what made it worse was as I was running down the beach trying not to kill my camera gear, I was watching as the waves got that beautiful velvety texture and it actually started to turn on, with perfect peeling A-Frames all up and down the beach, tapering so perfectly. But I had not other option than to head out and get home ASAP!

Here’s a double / split pic of one last shot I took, see how nice and perfect the waves were, even with that texture typical strong offshore that comes right before a big rain. The other pic shows the path of that hurricane I was talking about. Its going to be a very rainy and possibly pretty destructive weekend, but we’re crossing our fingers it will die down (hopefully!!!)

Water and camera gear, NEVER a good combination, but rest assured, although I was soaked head to toe, my camera bag has a water cover, but by the time I got to my moto, my camera, my camera bag and everything was petty much soaked! I’ve got it all dried off (that’s why I love my Canon equipment, it’s made to withstand some water, but not for too long) I’ve got everything sitting in front of fans and everything should be all good!

Walking away from this, for me as a photographer, no bueno!!! But tomorrow is another day and I will for sure be out there in the Am since it’s been the most ideal time to shoot every day for weeks on end lately. So I will see you all out there in La mañana ~
