Nicaragua Surf Report for Friday, June 02, 2023

Josh S

Happy Friday everyone! Josh here with today’s shred report. I was pretty nervous that nobody would surf this AM, as the wind was onshore even at dawn. A few motivated surfers were unfazed by the onshore breeze. This guy was practically skipping out to surf lol.

Josh S

This skipping shredder was one of only a few guys in the water today. They definitely caught the best window from what I could tell, as the shape of the waves was still good and the high tide backwash hadn’t started yet.

Josh S

He, along with another shred-master in red, get all the glory of today’s surf report. You can he’s got a few stickers on the bottom of his board. If I had to speculate, I’d say he’s an up-and-coming competitive surfer from Brazil.

Josh S

Not only was he pushing hard on rail, but he was demonstrating his acrobatic skills. It takes plenty of repetitions to nail air-reverses of this level with the rail-grab. I was getting fired up to go for a surf after watching this guy go to town out there.

Josh S

In past surf reports, you likely noticed that I referred to the “coping” of the wave. This photo clearly displays the round and folding over “lip” or top section of the wave as it breaks. It resembles the round and slightly extended coping that is common to skate ramps, hence our adoption of the term as surfers.

Josh S

The Brazilian and Latin American surfers are light, springy, yet still strong nowadays. I think the "Brazilian storm” is here and that these guys with their precise and nimble maneuvers will dominate all contests held in wave pools and spots like Trestles, California. I mean I wouldn’t stand a hope of a chance against these guys in a heat haha.

Josh S

Upon closer scrutiny of this image, I could really appreciate how this guy perfectly balances power and weightlessness on the board. He pushes and rotates through his turns just enough to achieve the desired effect, while staying light on top of his boards deck. This nimbleness helps avoid loss of speed through prolonged friction on his surfboard’s rail.

Josh S

This guy whipped out a large portion of the total number of moves from surfing’s repository/encyclopedia. His technique was ripped straight-out of the same textbook as well. Here’s a grade-A roundhouse cutback where he is using his leading hand as the center point of “the clock” which his body and board rotate around.

HIIIII-YAH! Karate-kicking his way through this backside air-reverse. *Carl Douglas — Kung Fu Fighting plays in the background*

Josh S

One surfer on his way out to get radical and upside down in the onshore conditions. I hear you man, I was pretty inspired after seeing today's two surf-stars on a tear out there. A couple other shredders weren’t quite sold which is understandable after the epic run of waves we had last week.

Josh S

I spotted one of my favorite families in Iguana going for a stroll on the beach! Lance, Sophie, Rowan, and Riggs. The onshore breeze is definitely coolest and most prevalent right on the waterline, so these guys made a good move to enjoy some family time together while staying cool. They were collecting shells for an art project that Rowan is putting together. Happy hunting team!

Josh S

Drumroll please… Enter our second and last shred-master from this morning’s surf, Mr. Rojo! He couldn’t let his younger challenger in black hog all the waves and airspace, so Mr. Rojo had to get out there and keep him humble.

Josh S

After seeing this guy surf, I gotta say he is a true surfing Jedi. I mean look at his form here! He looks like they photoshopped him out of Kelly Slater’s Pro Surfer (it’s a video game).

Josh S

To slam today’s surf report closed, here is a devastating blast from one of Mr. Rojo's last waves of my photo session. His younger challenger may have been slightly more nimble and springy, but Mr. Rojo is way beyond him in terms of power and strength. Sick turn dude, I hope I can pull one of these off in the next couple of days.

Josh S

That’s all for today folks! The rain is making the plant-life more vibrant here and is (hopefully) good for the local farmers. Stay good, happy, and healthy out there! If you’re liking Hacienda Iguana (paradise on earth if you ask me), the waves, the surfers, and/or my reports, then be sure to check back in for future reports. Looks like more onshore wind tomorrow, but luckily the Brazilian’s are here to teach us that onshore isn’t necessarily bad hahaha!
