Nicaragua Surf Report for Saturday, February 25, 2006

OK, let's get this party started. Today is the first day of the National Surf Contest at Maderas. We've got chest high waves and howling offshores. There is a buzz in the air with anticipation of the event. Here is a shot of the scaffolding on Machete point, which proved to be too unstable to hold the speakers due to the wind.

We've got over 80 competitors from around Nicaragua and Costa Rica here today - It's impossible to keep track of them all. This is Larry.

It's hard to show just how hard the offshores were blowing in these picture, but take our word for it - it was HOWLING! At one point it ripped up the giant Red Bull umbrellas and sent them careening down the beach.

Of course, there were plenty of chicks at the beach today too and Roberto was snapping shots of them all. This on is titled "Primary Colors".

We had surfers...

...hot moms

...and divers (check out the trigger finger on Roberto!)

Back to today's surfing action - as expected, the local boys from SJDS put on a strong showing. This is Oliver.

This is Pancho - advancing through the early rounds.

This is young Rex, take advantage of his small stature in these conditions.

This is Samir, who also put on a good showing through the early rounds.

We started at 9:00 am and went all day long until 5:00 pm - very long, but also very smoothly run. Check back tomorrow for the conclusion of the finals.
