Nicaragua Surf Report for Sunday, February 17, 2008

Welcome to the surf report for today. This is Jairo "Come Pan" reporting from out here at Maderas.  We've got a new swell coming in and it lookes like the waves have bumped up a notch since yesterday.  It's running about waist to shoulder high on sets, the wind is offshore and the water is still chilly if you skin it(comfortable in a long sleeve top or a shorty). Check it out.

Here we have Pedro from france, his dad brought him on a surf trip to Nicaragua and he's been surfing every single day.  He's super small, but the kid rips!

It's great to look at our friends working hard out there and perfecting their maneuvers. Here is Augusto "La Gaviota" Chamorro with a nice spray.  We are still raising funds to help send the local kids to the surf contest in Panama and we still need your help.  Our goal is to raise $1400 and right now we are at $875.  If you are able to help out, please send us an email to: [email protected].

This weekend was the big Harley Davidson Motorcycle party in SJDS.  There were over 300 bikers cruising through our little town and there were big parties on the beach to celebrate.  Word has it that Carlos Caliente stayed out until dawn and woke up the next day with a mermaid tattoo, but that hasn't been confirmed.  Here's a shot of the bikes on the bayfront.

Larry "Carita de Venado" Davila was out there and he was working hard too. Here he is with a cool floater. Larry likes to wear the red "santa claus" fullsuit when the water gets chilly, although I imagine that's a little overkill.  It looks pretty cool though.  Larry is one of the promising youngsters who needs your help to get to Panama this year (did I mention he also makes straight A's in school?  Yes, really!)  Let's help him out if we can!

What about Alverto "El Gallito" Romano into the action today. Here he is looking for the barrel. Don't give up buddy one of these days you'll get it.

These local Arena Caliente guys decided spend the day at home because they are so tired from the party last night.  That's more waves for the rest of us. Que viva la Ron Plata!!!

This is young Rex "La Bestia" Calderon.  He's becoming a fixture at Playa Maderas these days - anytime he's not in school, he's surfing.  Don't let his youth fool you, this youngster is full of focus and loves to surf.

This time of year, we have lots of cruise ships passing through SJDS.  I think this is like the 5th different one in the last 7 days.  That's about twice as many as we were getting at this time last year.  It seems that people are finally starting to realize how cool a destination Nicaragua really is.  We should have a couple more days of fun waves from this swell so stay tuned with us.
