Nicaragua Surf Report for Friday, July 14, 2023

Josh S

Happy Friday everyone! Welcome to today’s surf report from Playa Colorado. Josh here again with today’s surf conditions.

Josh S

This chica right here ended up being the superstar of today’s report. She combo’d her friends surfing near her at the peak in front of Pili’s (the beach club).

Josh S

This little dude showed some great speed and style on this top-turn! Unfortunately he took this wave in just as I arrived to shoot. I bet he would’ve come in runner-up behind our chica shredder had he stayed out!

Josh S

Today’s surf conditions disappointed to the downside, but every 20 minutes there would be a good set with a makable barrel. So much for 15 to 16 second interval :(

Josh S

This “billabong guy” came in second in today’s heat (I’m the judge haha). He managed to get some good torque and drive through his turns even though it was tiny out there.

Josh S

This blonde fella got a nice floater on this left! When the conditions get small and soft, it’s critical that you capitalize on every steep section thrown your way (as they are pretty rare at high tide here when it’s small).

Josh S

The blonde fella was well prepared to cozy up on rail in today’s “cotton candy” conditions. That’s my special term I use to describe soft conditions.

Josh S

Bam! The chica shredder was out there dropping hammers! I think her rail game is better than mine is!

Josh S

She even managed to get a little tail slide despite the soft conditions. Jamming her lead forearm into the whitewater and kicking her back foot through the turn.

Josh S

Yep, she won today no doubt about it! These previous three photos were actually all from the same wave! That’s an excellent ride especially given today’s super soft and slow conditions.

Josh S

Another sick lip-line belt from one of the kids out front of Pili’s this afternoon. The surf was very marginal, but these kids didn’t miss a single set.

Josh S

Sequence of rotation? Check!

Josh S

Look at how technical her turns are! She really did well opening up her lead palm and rotating her line of sight all the way back around to the top of the whitewater.

Josh S

Although the chica dominated the heat total today, the Billabong guy takes the cake for most water displaced on this backside hack. I think his spray thrown was larger than the face of the wave that he was riding!

Josh S

That wraps up Friday’s action! The waves were weak-sauce, but our talent in the water today was strong! We are fortunate here to (usually) host such skilled surfers. Tomorrow is forecasted to be a bit bigger than today, but I’m not going to hold my breath after today’s shock to the small side relative to what was forecasted. I hope to see y’all tomorrow for Saturday’s action yewww!
