Nicaragua Surf Report for Sunday, January 07, 2024

Josh S

Sunday shred-tastic surf report coming in hot from Panga Drops this morning. It was a little, but other than that it was pretty much pumping for this time of the year.

Josh S

Emiliano Abate was one of today’s superstars. This might’ve been my first time seeing him ride a Wavestorm, and wow… He rips on it!

Josh S

Emi’s longboard style looks strikingly similar to my brother’s relaxed posture through his turns. They are both pretty tall, so maybe that has something to do with it?

Josh S

Even the end sections weren’t safe from Emi.

Josh S

Kevin Cortez got one excellent ride during my time shooting this AM. I like his relaxed, but functional rotation through this carve.

Josh S

Woah, that’s some crazy rail-game! I’m surprised he was able to manage his drive through this roundhouse without bogging rail. It just goes to show how precisely Kevin can manage his weight distribution while riding. How cool is his style with his lead hand touching the surface of the wave?

Josh S

Slam that section shut Kev!

Josh S

The tide was high, so there would be an occasional barrel on the insider runners. The wind direction was pretty much perfect, blowing straight up the face of rights which further “hollowed” out the wave.

Josh S

Dang… I’m jealous my brother got a piece of this window and I was behind the lens haha :’(

Josh S

Speak of the devil…

Josh S

Pangas can be a very challenging wave to perform strong maneuvers on shortboards. So the fact that so many of today’s surfers were blasting through top turns highlights how beneficial the boost in the swell for the next 7 days is and will be.

Josh S

Emi and Kevin both got some combo highlight reels, so now it’s Johnny boy’s turn.

Josh S

Watch out for this ring of spray! John showcasing some quality body mechanics, specifically his trailing elbow getting pulled back to drive through this top turn.

Josh S

To close this finale ride, John found himself out in the flats, so he extended his legs and slightly lifted his right hand to generate some drive / propulsion back toward the pocket / whitewater.

Josh S

Get out there Kai! Man, I’m seriously bummed I missed this window haha. Oh well, tomorrow’s swell forecast looks good so hopefully we get a second shot at glory tomorrow. The wind looks like it’s going to be absolutely ripping though, so I’d better bring my wind-shield wipers to clear my vision during my paddle-lines. I hope you enjoyed today’s epic (relatively speaking) offseason conditions, and see y’all tomorrow.
