Nicaragua Surf Report for Friday, June 23, 2023

Josh S

Friday surf report fun at Colorados. Josh here again with today’s beautiful surf and weather conditions. Carlos packing a bomb to lead off the report, what’s new?

Josh S

The surf picked up notably as the day progressed. It was very mellow at daybreak, but by 9:00am there were head high sets were rolling through consistently.

Josh S

You’re probably familiar with Finley by now, and if you’re not then you’d better get used to seeing him sprayed across my reports. He catches so many waves and surfs such a large portion of the day that you basically have to have paddled past him in the lineup if you’ve been surfing the past week LOL I’m very impressed with his rate of improvement. Last year Finley’s rail game was better than mine, now it’s WAY better than mine.

Josh S

Jeison practicing some Tai-Chi moves before jumping out? Haha the local boys here are crack me up. They are all friendly guys who have great senses of humor. They are competitive in the water, but that is a good thing in my opinion. Competition breeds competence :)

Josh S

Is that a blueberry Jolly-Rancher? Oh wait, it’s just another perfect mid-tide Colorados drainer. We are blessed here for sure.

Josh S

Carlos de Colorados (Carlos Perez) has this wave on lockdown. It’s almost like the inbound set-waves give him a precise position to be at as they hit. I almost wonder if he could’ve made this right with a blindfold? That ruins the view though which is a HUGE part of the barrel riding sensory experience.

Josh S

Uh oh! Carlos and Jeison party wave? Jeison probably suffered internally here haha. Carlos playing the “seniority” card instead of the “superior position” card here haha. Oh well, a party wave every now and again doesn’t hurt much.

Josh S

After making the party wave barrel, Carlos just casually busted a frontside air to seal the deal. No biggie for him.

Josh S

This fella took the perfect line on this right barrel. Representing the goofy-foot contingency. Tuck, duck, then pump!

Josh S

There were a few cuties out surfing (and ripping at that) today! Leave it to Tony Roberts to get the absolute best water angle. I wonder if he can elongate his arm at will like Mr. Stretch?

Josh S

Lesther Espinoza going full throttle on this square micro-tube! Lesther’s concentration is unbreakable from the moment he starts paddling for a wave that he KNOWS will be good. He isn’t keen on suffering opportunity losses.

Josh S

Perhaps Jeison was disillusioned after his party wave with Carlos and decided to head north in search of a different peak. It worked out as he snuck into this seemingly average left, that shaped up nicely as it unwound on the sandbar.

Josh S

Carlos has one of the coolest and most unique surf styles I’ve ever seen. I kid you not that he wiggled his board's nose back and forth during this floater at least 4 or 5 times LOL. It looked like he had cheat codes enabled where he was in a perpetual skateboard grind from Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3. Deep lore reference for you 90’s and early 00’s kids.

Josh S

Ahhhhhh… Heaven on Earth? If I had to pinpoint a spot on the globe that best represents it, I’d say right here inside Hacienda Iguana’s gates. Relatively Laissez-faire community with good people, good waves, good weather, and good food. Once you visit here and get a taste of the nectar, it becomes a yearly occurrence (from what I’ve observed with most folks who I meet here). That’s all of today’s surf action folks! I should be behind the lends again tomorrow, so if you’re begrudgingly following along with my reports here in Tube Land, then stop back by the website for more tomorrow evening.
