At the end of the road and next to the rivermouth, lies one of the best beach breaks in Nicaragua. El Astillero is a small fishing village, but it is also known for it’s hollow waves. Because it is usually smaller here, it is best to surf at mid tides when there is swell in the water. When it is smaller, the sandbar offers numerous peaky waves. The rights are usually better than the lefts. ADVICE: If you don't want to walk it, get a 4wd and drive down the beach – you can park in front of the wave. Be careful not to get caught by the high-tide and make sure you have somebody on the beach to watch your vehicle. WATCH OUT FOR: Dirty water during the rainy season and petty theft if you leave your vehicle unattended.
