Nicaragua Surf Report for Saturday, November 10, 2007

Pancho here with the report for Saturday. We've got small waves and offshore winds but we took the day off of surfing. Why? Today was the 7th annual panga fishing tournament here in San Juan Del Sur and the Dirty Sanchez was back in action! She's looking good too - check it out!

The event started at 6am from the dock and went until 3pm. Here's a shot of everyone getting ready and taking off in the morning. This is one of the best fishing tournaments in Nicaragua because almost all of the locals can compete - and do very well. We're told that there were over 30 boats participating this year.

If you've been here, you've probably seen our stickers around town. We give them away and they turn up in the craziest places. When we saw "LittleBoatBigHeart" rocking the NSR on the motor, we had to take a photo.

The water has already turned cold this year and the locals say it won't be warming up until March (keep this in mind when you come down to surf - bring a vest/top or even a shorty). The cold water is good for some fish and bad for others...This is Codo, grabbing our first fish of the day (a big Jack).

Here we are with another Jack! These fish don't care about the water temp. There was actually a category for "biggest Jack", so it's not as bad as it might seem - Plus, Codo likes to eat them.

At one point we thought we had a really big fish on the line. It was really difficult to gain line...and then we saw it. Yes, we accidentally hooked a turtle in the hind leg. Fortunately, it wasn't bad and popped right out. This is Codo, releasing the turtle after extracting the hook.

After it was all said and done, we managed to make it back to the docks in one piece. We ended up with a bucket full of Bonitos and a couple of Jacks (we were told the Turtle didn't count). And even though we didn't win, we had a blast - plus we didn't have to clean a bunch of fish because we gave them all away!

On the other hand - our friends over at Surfari Charters had another epic day of fishing and SUBU'd their way to the awards pedestal a couple of times. Here they are holding up three big Wahoo!

This is Capt. Moss, Brodie and Josco - holding first place trophies for "Biggest Fish" and "Total Weight" and further cementing Surfari Charters and the Va Pue team as the best fishermen in all of Nicaragua.

It's fun to come in at the end of the day and see everyone's catch. Check out this local with a giant Barracuda! It's almost bigger than him.

It's a great time to be in Nicaragua and today was another awesome day! We'll leave you with one last shot of San Juan Del Sur, as the afternoon sun fades away...
