Nicaragua Surf Report for Thursday, October 25, 2007

The two day event started with a mass trash pickup on Monday. Approximately 300 kids participated in cleaning the streets and beach. It was pouring down rain but everyone was still charging. The event was aimed at teaching the kids environmental awareness. You want to see what can happen if everyone works together? Check out all this trash that was taken off the beach!!!

The second day of the event included a big march through Astillero and then a presentation at the school. The Mayor was in attendance along with other community leaders. MARENA was there to teach the kids the importance of protecting the Chacocente Refugio which is one of only 7 places in the world where up to 10,000 turtles can lay eggs in one night. The ceremony included skits, dances, puppet shows, and presentations all aimed at protecting the environment.

The brainchild Surfari Charters, we also kicked off a new program in Astillero which is aimed at on-going trash pick-up. Basically we presented three surfboards to the Mayor Loida and Doribel Lopez of Astillero (community leader). The surfboards will be kept at the fish co-op where all kids can come and rent them for two hours by bringing two large trash bags of trash collected from the beach or other public areas. As we look to expand the program in Astillero and beyond, we would be stoked on further donations of surfboards (especially tuff-lites 6'0" and under, which should last longer). Each board could represent 2-10 bags of trash coming off of the beach each day. This is a great way to contribute to the surfing community and help teach environmentally conscious behavior to the kids at the same time. Please contact us if you are interested in donating a surfboard to this cause!

Check out the effort that was made putting together this model showing the importance of protecting the environment. It might seem second nature to most of us, but in Nicaragua, this really is HUGE!

Here is a shot of a storyboard that was made showing all the sealife we have here in Nicaragua.

These guys each won their respective category for "best model of an animal". You can see birds, fish and even a turtle. Again, big thanks to Surfari Charters for spearheading this effort and getting involved. We'll keep you posted on upcoming events as we learn about them.

First at all we want to introduce our new "NSR RASTAFARI" , we've been working for 6 weeks to make this a reality. If you are planning to come down to Nicaraggua try to find this Ciclo-Taxi and get a ride on it, you we'll have one of the best experience down here in Nicaragua. Sharing with the NSR crew!!!

Today we have about the same conditions as yesterday. It's about chest to shoulder high on sets and the wind is light offshore early in the morning.

Oliver "El Monito" Solis was surfing as one of his best day out here at Maderas today. Here he is with a cool spray on a small wave, that's no easy to do on that kind of wave buddy.

And his friend Augusto "La Gaviota" Chamorro was shredding all over the place. These guys are surfing so much better after two weeks with onshore wind.

Edwin "El Tuzo" Morales was out today and scored with the wipe out of the day. Yeahh buddy, you can even looks photogenic on wipe out shots.

Young Rex "La Bestia" Calderon as always was killing it, this guy can surf very well no matters about conditions. Here he is going big with an aerial with 360's.

Okey as always was hunting on the beach. Here he running fast to catch this beautiful mermaid.

Luis "La Baloy" Chamorro was ripping it up today. Here he is with a sweet vertical maneuver.

All right folks, that's all for today.
