Nicaragua Surf Report for Monday, August 29, 2022

Brian Scott

Howdy folks and welcome to a new week from the other land down under. Well, under the weather or rather under the dark and ominous clouds that is, which would be a better way to put it. Let’s just say the weather this season has been more moody than a Cancer (zodiac sign) on a super full moon while all the planets are aligned and in retrograde all at the same time! Haha - ok, no offense to my Cancer (zodiac friends) but I couldn’t think of a more accurate way to describe just how intensely shifty, moody and completely unpredictable the weather has been for this 2022 season! All that a being said, today was one for the “let’s get creative again” kind of surf reports, but I have some nice “moody pics for you” that I think you’ll still like!

Brian Scott

For starters. . . heading out of the bubble today, unfortunately I saw (again - seen this many times before) but this could have potentially really done some damage and hurt or even kill some poor unsuspecting person sitting waiting for the bus at this what used to be a really nice bus stop at the Gigante entrance. Where I come from there were signs for “watch for crossing deer” here there should be watch for falling giant a$$ tree branches!!!

Brian Scott

But if you know Nicaragua and its people well enough, you know that they will always have an ear to ear grin every day and greet you with nothing but complete heartfelt hospitality any day of the week, rain or shine, falling trees, raging flash flood rivers, you name it!

Brian Scott

Aaaaaaaand here comes Miss Moody!!! Mother nature, you’ve been killing me this year, just so you know!!!

Brian Scott

The pics don’t really do it justice, but this was one of theeee darkest rain clouds I think I’ve seen coming and i was on my moto doing about 100km to beat this thing home in time so I didn’t get drenched.

Brian Scott

As quickly as the rain storm was approaching, I still needed to get down to the playa to check to see if there was even anyone out surfing..? Nope, not here. . . Nada!

Brian Scott

Neither here, and it looks like the rain was already hitting Gigante, where I just came from.

Brian Scott

So what’s better than taking a much needed & very curious look to see, just exactly what it looked like exactly one year ago on this same day back in 2021? Well, here you have it. End of August perfection and I sooooo badly wish today looked like this instead of the pics prior to this.

Brian Scott

Daaaang, was it good!!!!

Brian Scott

Ok, here’s that super magical and double edged sword of a year for surfers the world over. This was out time machine magical 2020. The year of the BIG C. And for all of us here. . . it was un-C. Meaning the most uncrowded this place has ever been in maybe a decade. Gotta love Big Chris’s drone arial shot of perfectly pumping Playa Colorados with what was the norm for this year, which was at maximum capacity the lineup had at most 10-12 people out throughout the day, while the waves fired away…. day after day after day.

Brian Scott

I remember Shane Dorian and his family snuck in just in time to be “trapped here for a few months”. Good thing too because if I remember correctly, even Hawaii closed their beaches, so this place was a surfers dreamscape! Mini Shane-O, Jackson, pulling into probably his hundredth (at the very least) barrel while this place just sat empty for the entire season!

Brian Scott

Local stand out and also fellow fotog, Tony Z, reaping the rewards of barely having to pick up his camera for almost a whole surf season AND just surf his brains out.

Brian Scott

Sooooo, with this season (and it’s definitely going to be a very wet one come the normal almost all rainy days of October. Like the Hawaiian’s say for the iconically classic and infamous Eddie Ikau surf contest, “The bay calls the day”….. well as you can see our little but humble bay called the day for rainy gloomy weather. But there’s always tomorrow. We like to keep things positive around here. So we’ll see what tomorrow brings. Until then, enjoy the rest of your Monday and I will see you all back here again tomorrow. Saludos ~
