Nicaragua Surf Report for Monday, July 17, 2017

Javier Baldovinos

Hello everyone! The NSR team wishes you a Happy Monday! This is Baldo reporting from this beautiful Nicaragua surf destination known as playa Santana.

Javier Baldovinos

According to the wave forecast (I use MSW) today is the smallest day of the week (and probably the month too!). But as you all may know, size doesn’t matter when it comes to enjoying surfing.

Javier Baldovinos

And when it comes to enjoying surfing there is no better example than “good vibe” Gil… , big or small, he is always smiling and having fun in and out of the water.

Javier Baldovinos

Another great example is the most famous Nicaraguan surfer… Rex “La Bestia” Calderón, who visited us this morning here at the beach. This guy is a wave killing machine, no matter what size of waves he surfers, he destroys every corner of it.

Javier Baldovinos

Fast, powerful turns combine with a great array of aerials makes Rex be part of the tiny group of surfers that have represented Nicaragua in many international surf competitions.

Javier Baldovinos

There were a few girls working on their tan with the morning sun while enjoying the surf.

Javier Baldovinos

Mikaela was one of them of course! Remember that if you are in the area and you need a massage, she is the one to call. (hopefully this little publicity will get me a free massage :) )

Javier Baldovinos

The waves were small but the water was glassy and clear, and the shape was great. Such a beauty (and shame) to see an empty wave break all the way to the sand.

Javier Baldovinos

As soon as an empty way went by, somebody was heading that way to look for the next.

Javier Baldovinos

Another Sanjuaneño that came today was Bryan Estrella… the upcoming star following Rex’s steps, attacking the lip with determination, power and control.

Javier Baldovinos

Can you tell that Rex has a powerful surf? He was the Nicaraguan surf champion for almost a decade.

Javier Baldovinos

And Rex’s little grasshopper getting closer to surpass his master.

Javier Baldovinos

Small waves? Small barrels. Estrella managed to find room under the lip for a small tube ride demonstration.

Javier Baldovinos

Here is Rex again with a 360 air (I should know the names of all the different aerials with their variety of grabs and such but, I’ve never been that technical, an air it’s an air).

Javier Baldovinos

The tide was getting low so it was time to grab some breakfast and get to work… after all, today it’s Monday and even here at the beach we work.

Javier Baldovinos

And that’s exactly what I did after taking photos for the report… I had to go to Colorado to give a surf lesson to one of our NSR clients.

Big thanks to Hotsticks for the photos!

Javier Baldovinos

Jess had been staying with his surfer friends in one of the NSR houses on the beach for almost a week. He rented a board and tried by himself every day, but after many tries, many sore muscles and many frustrations he decided to get a proper surf lesson with me.

Javier Baldovinos

Once I told him (and showed him) what to do and how to do it, and guide him on safety, waves and technique, it took him a few waves to be able to stand up and ride waves all the way to the beach. Way to go Jess! Now you need to reserve your next trip back to Nicaragua as soon as possible to keep practicing!

Javier Baldovinos

This is the kind of job I like… share your passion with others. If you or one of your family or friends need surf lessons give me a call, I’ll be glad to teach them how to have fun!

Looks like tomorrow a new swell will start hitting the coast. Stay tune because it looks like it’s going to be epic!
