Nicaragua Surf Report for Sunday, July 11, 2010

Hi folks, this is Lucha Libre with the Sunday surf report.  Usually this is my normal day off but today I had to work to bring you some of the action we had up north at one of our favorite surf spots around and also a little bit of the action we had in the second National Surf Contest at Playa Santana.  Unluckily the day started with lots of rains and some side shore winds but later in the afternoon the rain stopped but it was still pretty cloudy.  Check it out!!!

We are just going to throw a couple of shots in from this spot because the conditions were not very good.  Here we have this unknown rider riding one of the cleaner waves we had in the morning during the little storm we had.

On the last shot from this spot is caught this ripper with a cool frontside turn.  It is good the rain stopped around 11:00 am because we were able to snap a couple shots even if the light wasn’t good for photos.

Later on, we moved up to the contest to see what was going on over there.  Lots of people showed out to enjoy the show.  Here is this shot of the scene.

Did I say lots of people was enjoying the show?  This big boy was able to make it to the beach and was having a blast.  Hijjaaaaaaaaaaa!

All the categories were very tight but always it is not enough to be a good surfer, you also need to be a good competitor.  Rex “La Bestia” Calderon is a good surfer and also knows how to compete that’s why he made it into the final heats in Junior and Open categories.  Here he is with a sick snap right in the pocket of this powerful wave.

Before the final heats in each category we had a free air show commanded by a few international surfers.  This event was won by Mason Barns throwing some killer aerial maneuvers like this one.

The final heat for the big pangas was dominated by Macho Nacho with his sweet style.  Here he is caught taking a beer shower.  Nice imagination Lance!

The best waves came in on the final heat for the big pangas.  Check out Baldo taking a nice one!

We kept going with the final heat for juniors, were the little Jackson from Gigante was doing his own show.  Here he is styling on his backside tube ride, grabbing the rail and touching the wall.  That’s sick for a 13 year old little kid.

Everybody knows that Brody is one of the best American surfers living down here in Nicaragua.  He moved down a few years ago to be able to surf good waves every day.  Sweet maneuver dude!

Let’s take it to the podium now:  Girls

1) Kristin Moss
2) Lindsay Sherman
3) Ashley Blaylock
4) Sherri G

Longboard:

1) Lance Moss
2) Oliver Solis
3) Javier Baldovinos

Juniors:

1) Rex Calderon
2) Joel Chavez
3) Jackson Obando
4) Yuber Martinez

Open:

1) Rex Calderon
2) Brody Walker
3) Lance moss
4) Dave Holloway

This time we had a 3 boards raffle, one among all the juniors and two among the open.  The boys were thinking to get the girls stead of the boards but that wasn’t part of the deal!  These boards were sponsored by Buitre, Shafer and the Surf Sanctuary.

The first board went all the way down to Gigante with Kevin Cortez.  Now he has a sick board to charge some huge barrels.

The second board went all the way down to San Juan del Sur with “La Baloy” Chamorro.  At the end of the contest he got one of the best prizes even if he wasn’t able to keep competing in the contest.

The last one stayed in Popoyo.  Do you guys think that this little kid is stoked?  Just check out his face!

We want to say thanks so much to all the people who made this possible, all the sponsors that are always supporting the Nica boys to improve their levels and become better surfers and persons.  That’s all for today, please check back tomorrow!

It's Kate again and I know it is late but I had to post these pictures from today. I had my first day of water photography and it was challenging to say the least. It rained all morning but I still managed to pull off a few shots worthy of posting.
