Nicaragua Surf Report for Thursday, June 07, 2018

Javier Baldovinos

Hey everyone, I hope all of you had a great Thursday just like the one I had. I started my day taking some photos at Santana beach.

Javier Baldovinos

The tides was already too high when I got there so, the waves were not that great but still every so often a good set appeared.

Javier Baldovinos

Even if the waves were not 5 stars today, you could find the right one that will put a smile on your tan face.

Javier Baldovinos

Instead of keep taking photos of not-so-great waves, I decided to take a quick tour to Managua to do some shopping, and the fastest way to do that is to jump on one of these and enjoy the view of my beautiful Nicaragua.

Javier Baldovinos

For my surprise, I found my really cool friends Ashley and Walter (and kids) flying with me... Ashley is the only American that has represented Nicaragua in international surf competitions, the famous Chica Brava. And I know Walter, the famous Cabra, since we were little kids living in Managua. Great seeing you guys!!

As soon as the plane takes off this is the view you get… the Pacific Ocean and Colorado waves saying “come back soon”.

Javier Baldovinos

And I did come back really soon… after only 20 minutes flight to the Managua International Airport (which by car takes usually 2.5 hours!), and 4 hours doing errands, including lunch with friends, I went back on the little plane. Check it out, it can fit up to 12 people plus crew. The best part? it only takes 20 minutes to go back to the beach!

Javier Baldovinos

Second best part? The views! Coming from Managua the first thing you will noticed is the Masaya Volcano, which is actually 2 volcanos (Masaya and Santiago) and 3 other extinct craters. With better weather the plane flights right above it and you can see the lava lake bubbling at the bottom, amazing!

Javier Baldovinos

Right next to the volcano you will find the Masaya Lake (the volcano is on the right of the picture) and Masaya City, known as "The Cradle of Nicaraguan Folklore" and the very heart of Nicaraguan handicrafts.

Javier Baldovinos

You will see Granada City, historically one of Nicaragua's most important cities, economically and politically. Granada is located on the coast of Lake Nicaragua, with the Isletas Archipelagos, composed by 365 little islands, beautiful place to visit!

Javier Baldovinos

Granada is the oldest city in the whole Continental Americas, founded and registered as a city in 1524. It has a rich colonial heritage, seen in its architecture and structure. That humongous building in the center is the Granada Cathedral, and the other one to the left is the San Francisco Church, the oldest church in Granada (and Nicaragua) built in 1524.

Javier Baldovinos

The next thing you see is Mombacho Volcano (with the Isletas on the background) with its cloud forest that occupies much of its sides and top. It’s a great place for hiking on the several trails around the 4 dormant craters at the top.

Javier Baldovinos

A little bit farther you can see Conception Volcano and the shade of Maderas Volcano (bad weather sucks for good photos) the two volcanos that form Ometepe Island on Lake Nicaragua.

Javier Baldovinos

And once you start getting closer to the Pacific Coast (like 2 minutes later) you can check out the surf at a couple of good places… Check out Popoyo Outer Reef!

Javier Baldovinos

If you are staying in one of our Rancho Santana properties, here is Rancho Santana’s Club House overlooking First Peak at Santana beach (it was low tide so it was not a great moment for a photo).

Javier Baldovinos

How about checking Rosada point even before you get to one of the beachfront properties we manage? The house on the left is Casa Rock, right in the middle is Casa Brown and the one on the right is Casa Del Sol.

Javier Baldovinos

And right when you are about to finish your flight, you pass right in front of Panga Drops at Hacienda Iguana.

Javier Baldovinos

And of course, the perfect tube rides of Colorado! Can’t wait to be in the water chasing those barrels.

Javier Baldovinos

And here we are again, four and a half hours later, back at Costa Esmeralda airport, just a few minutes away from the beach. Flying is definitely not a bad way to travel to the coast from Managua (and back!).

Javier Baldovinos

Thanks Alex Cuadra, General Manager of Costa Esmeralda airport, for the lift, it has been a great experience!

I hope all of you have enjoyed it as much as I did. Cheers everyone!!
