Nicaragua Surf Report for Saturday, May 23, 2009

Hey everybody and welcome to the Saturday surf report from Astillero. The first day of the contest saw some good swell at about head high and offshore wind for the first half of the day. Again the contest was great and everyone had a good time. Since Astillero is out in the middle of nowhere, there was a smaller crowd then at the Maderas contest. Even so there was a pretty solid showing.

This is a shot from behind the river of the judge’s stand. When the tide came in the waves where connecting the ocean to the river and washing all the spectators across the beach. It’s was pretty funny to watch people scramble for their stuff so it wouldn’t get washed out to sea.

Earlier in the day at low tide the waves were really hollow. This is a shot of Yuber Martinez bottom turning into a great wave. The juniors got some of the best waves of the day! There were definitely some overhead sets pushing through making for a great juniors round.

Lance Moss from Surfari Charters was ripping as always throwing man fans all over the place. Here he is on a great speed floater, making it look easy! As a guide in this part of Nicaragua Lance knows these waves like the back of his hand. We’ll see you tomorrow in Round 3!

There was a lot of wild mustache action at the contest today and Come Pan was all over it! The pledges have been trying to grow Foo Man Chews for a week and they were getting a run for their money!

Rex “La Bestia” Calderon was in form as usual. After winning the last contest he has to be favored to win this one as well. With turns like this and the 360 airs he was busting out today looks like it’s in the bag. See you tomorrow Rex, get some sleep!

Roque “Balboa” just got back from the United States and got out to the surf contest today. Here he is showing off what he learned while he was in California! Sick shot, good luck tomorrow in the third round!

This is another shot from the juniors heats. The waves were really coming together and throwing on the beach. Edwin Chavez was in the barrel forever and finally got pinched at the end. If he would have come out he would have won the heat on that wave alone.

The kids were playing in the river while the surf contest was going on. It was really hot outside and it was a good way to cool off! Here is a kid doing a backflip into the river. Just do that on a surfboard and you’ll be winning this contest for sure!

For the last shot of the day we have our boy Junior “La Juliana” Martinez throwing chunks on a great roundhouse cutback. Stay tuned tomorrow, we will have a full recap of the contest and all the heat results! Cross your fingers that the wind stays off shore so we can get the sick competition in some sick surf!
