Nicaragua Surf Report for Monday, May 10, 2021

Brian Scott

Hola y Bienvenido to the Monday surf report! It’s still the calm before the storm, literally from todays dark looming grey cloudy rain clouds and that epic swell that’s marching it’s way towards us closer and closer. In the meantime, sit back and relax and enjoy todays mini waves with a few iconic surfers who came into town to taste some of Nica’s Emerald Coast salt water taffies!

Brian Scott

Even when this place has small waves, it still rocks!  No BS, pun intended!!! jaja

Brian Scott

April shaped up to be a pretty freakin’ nice month. Now with May well under way with a solid and very possibly, our biggest swell being forecast for 2021, if you’re planning on coming down, I’d throw that extra step up or mini gun in your bag. That’s if you’re into maxing surf.

Brian Scott

If you’re into maxing out your airs, this guys twinny along with his dope color scheme fits perfectly slotted in todays report…. thank you kind sir!

Brian Scott

Having flair will certainly get the stare, but a speed turn flair with hair like this hombres here definitely won’t make the cutting room floor!

Brian Scott

I’m about 5’ 7” depending on my chancletas or flat footing it, and I’m usually right at or sometime in the water up to my shins, so it’s safe to say I am usually accurately right at sea level…. so I usually use where the sky meets the ocean horizon line to gauge punts like this one here. Even though it’s considered “above the lip surfing” when I see peeps boosting above that straight line in the background, going near OR well above, it’s a pretty big air in my opinion!

Brian Scott

Crispy, super in focus & tac sharp as a needle. I do my part, I leave the rest up to the surfers!

Brian Scott

Lots of ripper out there today. I mean for a Monday. Tuesdays are always… better. Hahaaaa J/k every day there’s some kind of ripping going down.

Brian Scott

Lindsey out there, actually only one of the two surfer gals I saw out there today while I was shooting, but then again, she’s one of my super dedicated monthly surf photo subscribers. Hit me up if you’re here long(er) term than just a month or less and interested. It’s a great deal and Lindsey and all the others who are doing it get special know about intel when and where I’m shooting every day!

Brian Scott

Maria same boat just doing it with god style like Lindsey but backside. Nice one Chicas!!!!

Brian Scott

A cover up is a cover up, I’m sure has been written more than once or twice by some of those prolific creative writers in one of those sad but long lost magazines that I used to love to read each and every month. Man there’s just nothing like flipping through that new month mag that came in your mail box every month. You feel me old(er) surfer amigos?

Brian Scott

Anyone else (younger) whom maybe never got to experience that feeling of seeing all the amazing and incredibly talented and very closely hand chosen photos from all the pioneer surf photographers (many who I admire and shoot to this very day thanks to their inspiration) that took almost a whole month to look at and go over and back and forth to create each and every issue, well, digital is cool and all, and it even has it’s pro’s;  but…. ok well… I think we’ll just leave it at that. Just go on E-Bay and look for some printed mags… you’ll thank me later!  ;)

Brian Scott

Video, well that’s a whole other world and platform in itself. You should see my classic DVD collection tho!!!! (especially before Youtube and GoPro’s came along). Haha

Brian Scott

As a photographer, I know my cliental base well. Fun fact, almost 100% of your average surfers LOVE LOVE LOVE photos. there’s that really small fine eclectic group that don’t just like video clips, but they need them. Believe it or not it’s not completely all about watching yourself and making a clip and throwing it up on one of the multiple social media platforms, a lot of the surfers who prefer video usually surf really well…. like so well, photos aren’t really in their vocabulary. They use the moving 4K multiple frames to fine tune their surfing, from where their foot placement is all the way down to just the intricacies of how your arm or even hand looks on any certain part of a turn, air, or barrel …. and I know this personally working with a lot of up and coming very well known surfers while living in CA, shooting LOTS and LOTS of video clips.

Brian Scott

But, with all that mumbo jumbo that probably half of you could even care less that I shared that with you….. but its my job and I pay attention to it very closely. Kinda like Alex Knost does on every single wave he paddles into.

Brian Scott

Sick top turn, I can correct a few things, but then again, I don’t get paid to coach, but I could very easily well be one. Trust me when I say, I know way more about what a surfers going to do (just by his speed and body language) usually before they even know.

Brian Scott

This is what’s helped me over the years in saving countless unnecessarily unneeded wasted frame shots. Because what most people also don’t know or realize, DSLR cameras have a life span. It’s in the shutter count and sensor usage that eventually needs to be replaced. Think of your transmission or clutch or even your engine in your car (they’re parts that unfortunately live off miles - and us photographers gear is like cars….(and in certain cases, some cameras are actually just as much as a small car). And YES, some of the cameras I shoot with, a new sensor alone costs over $1000 (that’s not including the service technician fee of what’s usually around $400)

Brian Scott

No frames wasted and no correctional feedback with these guys and their surfing. I mean, come on, look at his board. No other explanation really needed. Haha

Brian Scott

When you see something that catches your eye like this, and you’re a surfer who see’s A LOT of exceptional surfing the world over, you know it’s gotta be something pretty rad.

Brian Scott

Well, it just so happened to be his amigo Gunner speed-lining it on this zippy little Colorado’s beach runner…

Brian Scott

I knew he was waiting to see what he was gonna pull. The big air, or the power lip bash. I like that he went with the latter. I’m sure Alex got a little tingle of chicken skin too! Surfing’s so fun…. it’s even better when you travel with just a few of your buddies and you get to surf some new and different waves.

Brian Scott

The list is long…. it may still even beat Kelly’s wave pool - who’s who, who’s glided on those glassy fresh water rights and lefts. I’m sure it might get surpassed eventually, but the upper class-men and women who’ve been fortunate to taste Nicaragua’s salty taffies always say the same thing….. This place is super magical and it’s always guaranteed, they all end up coming back after that first virgin trip! Thanks for the photo goods Alex and friends today. Maybe see ya out there mañana! Dale pues ~
