Nicaragua Surf Report for Thursday, April 20, 2017

Javier Baldovinos

Hello NSR fans, how are you today? Welcome to Thursday´s Surf Report. Today we woke up with light onshore so I decided to check out 3 different surf spots in the morning. It was interesting to see that in such a small distance from each other, there are waves for everyone… I found the fast, hollow waves of Santana; the big A-frame long walls of Popoyo; and right in between, the small, soft, friendly point break of Battleship point.

First stop… Santana beach. It was messy, fast and with big clean out sets. There were 6 people in the water spread out through out the whole beach. At first peak there were 3 young surfers, here is one of them hitting the lip.

The same kid taking advantage of the onshore winds to try to fly.

Look at him again spreading the wings on a late take off… he went down hard on this one!

Javier Baldovinos

This is his friend demonstrating the right way of flying. He´s probably saying “I´m the king of the world!” DiCaprio style.

On the far end of the beach there were the other 3 surfers. Look how calm the ocean looks.

Javier Baldovinos

And look how really was! Big, fast, gnarly looking waves. Many went unridden because it was a defying take off.

Hey look! Another surfer trying to fly! This guy didn´t eat it (like the other two) but went straight down the face missing the ride.

Second stop, only 5 minutes away… the famous Popoyo. And do you see what I mean with “famous”? Everyone was here!

Javier Baldovinos

I got to Popoyo right at high tide when the waves usually get fatter and slower, but definitely cleaner than Santana.

Javier Baldovinos

Popoyo offered more room for maneuvers, but it was very slow and crumbly.

Man 1: Look! Up in the sky! It’s a bird.
Woman: It’s a plane
Man 2: It’s Superman!
This guy wins today´s NSR flying competition! Maybe it wasn’t the best fly, but he definitely dressed up for the occasion!

Third and last stop… Battleship point a.k.a. Mag Rock. This spot is great for beginners, the wave is small, super soft and sloooow. If you like logging surfing then this is the place for you.

Javier Baldovinos

There were a couple of kids killing it. It was super fun to watch them ripping the hell out of the waves with their tiny surfboards. I´m going to start bringing my wife and kids here for them to surf.

Javier Baldovinos

Mag Rock is such a cool spot. The view of the coastline is amazing. Just on this photo you have Battleship point, Outer Reef, Popoyo, and far away, Guasacate.

That´s it for today. I hope you have enjoyed today´s surf report. Tomorrow it´s getting a little bit bigger but it looks like the wind won’t be in our favor. Silla!
