Nicaragua Surf Report for Saturday, January 27, 2018

Javier Baldovinos

Hello NSR followers, this is Baldo reporting for the first time on a Saturday. Even though here on the coasts of Nicaragua weekends don’t matter (every day can be a Sunday or a Monday), I did something different this time.

Javier Baldovinos

This morning the waves were still small so I took the opportunity to take my kid and his friends surfing. Here they are checking out the waves.

Javier Baldovinos

This “secret” spot is a little point break known for its soft and gentle waves, great for beginners and amazing for little kids.

Javier Baldovinos

Here is Mateo (4 ½ years old) with a big shaka, ready to represent the family on today’s surf report.

Javier Baldovinos

There was a big commotion at the beach… with the cold water (for Nicaraguan standards) the fish (mostly sardines and other small fish) get closer to shore looking for warmer waters, and the pelicans take advantage of the situation to have a feast… and fishermen too, of course!

Javier Baldovinos

Thanks to Etienne from Las Plumerias hotel, the kids had a proper surf lesson (Elisa and Emma are his daugthers)… first he showed them how to paddle.

Javier Baldovinos

Then how to stand up… back foot first, then push up, then front foot.

Javier Baldovinos

And then enjoy the ride!

Javier Baldovinos

With the help of Emeline, who was in charge of pushing the kids into the waves, and Etienne who was playing as the goalie, stopping the kids and making sure they didn’t crash into the rocks on the shore, the kids had a great time.

Javier Baldovinos

Here comes Mateo ready to attack the lip in one of the many rides he had this morning.

Javier Baldovinos

And while Mateo paddle out by himself back to the lineup, Emma (3 ½ years old) was on the move.

Javier Baldovinos

She still takes her time to stand up on every wave but she is always the last one to get out of the water. She loves surfing!

Javier Baldovinos

The goalie doing a great job, stopping and catching every kid before they crash into the rocks.

Javier Baldovinos

This spot is not just for kids… with the right equipment you can have a lot of fun here. This girl had a great style with her longboard.

Javier Baldovinos

Here comes the set! Ready Mateo?

Javier Baldovinos

This one has your name written on it Mateo, all yours! Paddle, paddle, paddle!

Javier Baldovinos

Look at the intensity, the concentration, the effort he is putting to catch this wave (and with a little push of Emeline of course).

Javier Baldovinos

He puts his back foot in position while checking the wave over his shoulder.

Javier Baldovinos

Now it’s time look forward and bring the other foot to the front.

Javier Baldovinos

Keeping his center of gravity low to have more stability. Go Mateo, Go!!

Javier Baldovinos

While Mateo, Emma and Elisa were shredding the waves, on the far north of the break the girl was doing her thing too. She was catching tons of waves.

Javier Baldovinos

And she didn’t mind sharing them with others.

Javier Baldovinos

After a great surf session the kids decided to go explore the rocks. That’s the deal: surf first, then play. (They haven’t realized yet that surfing is playing, but they will learn).

Javier Baldovinos

Right around midday I went to Santana to check it out. This is what I found…

Javier Baldovinos

The waves were bigger than the morning and just a few people in the water.

Javier Baldovinos

This is the biggest sets that came through, a big close out on most of them.

Javier Baldovinos

Party wave!

Javier Baldovinos

Dominique was out and enjoying the surf.

Javier Baldovinos

This guy was able to find and get in into a nice little barrel.

Javier Baldovinos

Front row sitting, not a bad place to hang out, right?

Javier Baldovinos

Before I go, I would like to ask all of you to try not to take my reports too serious, especially when there are no waves… it can turned into a hard task to write a report when there is nothing to report. The photographers at NSR are always trying to keep you entertain with our photos and especially with our writing. We don’t want to harm or make fun of anybody, but if you feel like we’ve done that, then we apologize for that. Have a great Sunday!
