Nicaragua Surf Report for Friday, January 07, 2011

The swell dropped a little bit but there were still many fun waves to be taken.  It was head high to over head on sets with nice offshore winds and the water was chilly.  Look forward  to see what we have for you!

The brand new San Juan del Sur Surf Association put together efforts and organized a local contest in town.  They did tag teams of 6 guys, constituted by two juniors, one girl, one bodyboard, 2 open surfers and one power surfer.  Here we have a shot of the 4 teams we have participating in this event.

A couple of the local surf shops, restaurants and small companies helped out to make this possible.  They sponsored wax, sunblock, food and drinks.  These were some of the sponsors that make this possible and we would like to say thanks so much to all of them.

Before the surf contest started all the local kids and old school surfers cleaned up the beach.  Dunia Burgos posing for the photo.

All the kids were very happy to participate in this event and they showed it in the water with their surf.  This is Rex “La Bestia” Calderon with a sick move.

This is Masequita running on the beach, just a few seconds from fun.  He’s one of the new grooms that the old surfers are trying to push now.

The bodyboarders were also doing their thing.  This is Nestor “El Grillito” Aleman showing us why he is the National Champ in this category.

Larry “Carita de Venado” Davila was throwing some serious sprays all afternoon long.  Check him out destroying the lip of this left hander.

Lot of locals were out having a good time, but there still many sick waves rolling in with no takers.  What a nice wave, uh!

Willian “El Canival” Mena came down to be part of this party and he loved it.  Here he is going big with a giant floater on this left hander.

Codo’s father was in charge of the horn.  Here he is doing his thing.  He probably is going to need a new tank of oxygen tomorrow because he was blowing that thing all afternoon long.

The event was won by Los Mopes composed by the juniors Harry Calderon, Gainer Granados, the bodyboarder Axel Carcamo, the open Willian Mena, Felipe Avendano and the power surfer Gerardo “El Mope” Miranda.  The main prize was a dinner for 6 at Ines Restaurant, a surf trip with Arena Caliente surf shop and another dinner sponsored by the mayor office.  No bad at all, uh.

Before the day was overed Oliver “El Monito” Solis paddle out and was ripping as always.  Here he is showing the juniors how is done.

The swell is supposed to drop tomorrow but it should be still pretty fun.  Please check back with us!
